Obituary for James Patrick Murphy

Surrounded by his wife and children James (Jim) Murphy passed away on Thursday, May 31, having suffered from pancreatic cancer. He was born in Milwaukee, WI on February 18, 1938, to John and Veronica Murphy. He was also welcomed by his big sister, Janet who was 2 years older. He enjoyed his early years in Milwaukee. After 12 years of Catholic education, he joined the U.S. Army and worked as a radio operator in South Korea for 2 years. Upon his military completion he returned to Milwaukee where he enrolled at Marquette University majoring in finance and accounting and graduating with honors. He started his working career as an investigator for Naval Intelligence before taking a job as a financial analyst at the Securities and Exchange Commission and then pursued his law degree at Georgetown University. He then began his career as a securities attorney with the Weatherhead Corporation in Cleveland before accepting a job with Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Ohio. After ten years, he was relocated to Pittsburgh when Marathon and U.S.Steel merged. Upon retirement, he volunteered with the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council as an English tutor to South Korean and Chinese students, a task he really enjoyed. Later he would become a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. His favorite interests were following the stock market and tending his garden. He planted many flowers every spring and loved watching his blooms spring to life. He leaves behind his wife, Sina(Hollis), whom he wed in 1966, and his children, Kevin (Christy) and Angela (Donn) Vanderploeg. Also five grandchildren, Rylan and Bridgit Murphy, and Connor, Dylan, and Gavin Vanderploeg. He also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Bob Spidell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister. A luncheon will follow immediately. All are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the North Hills Community Outreach, 1975 Ferguson Rd., Allison Park, PA 15101 or at the link below
